More seats added for award-winning REEL Thursdays movie!

Thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove, more movie-goers will be able to view the highly acclaimed film Philomena (PG) on March 20th!

“Our 150 tickets were completely sold at the beginning of the month,” says Maureen McDonald, Chair of the Friends of the Spruce Grove Public Library.   “But the Rotary Club came through for us, providing funds to rent a larger theatre and increase our seating capacity.”

Additional tickets, priced at $12 each, are now available at the Spruce Grove Public Library (SGPL) service desk or at Landmark Cinemas on the night of the fundraiser.

Nizar Abouchami, President of the local Rotary Club, said his organization’s mandate is to create positive, lasting change in the community.  “Bringing art house films that would otherwise not be shown in our city is a worthwhile cultural endeavor that we are proud to support.”

The Rotary Club joins Cargill Value Added Meats-Food Service and Liquor on McLeod as sponsors for the spring series of REEL Thursdays.

Nominated for numerous honours, including four Academy Awards, Philomena continues to attract wide-spread acclaim for its powerful true story of an unmarried Irish Catholic woman.   Decades after being forced by her community to give up her newborn son, Philomena Lee (Judi Dench) embarks on a search to find him with the aid of BBC reporter Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan).

Determined to be positive despite the obstacles that may lay ahead, the talkative Philomena shares stories from her past, savouring every moment on her journey to meet her child.  While her quirks may test Sixsmith’s patience, he ultimately proves to be her biggest supporter.

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) reviews say Dench shows her softer side, giving a tour-de-force performance that is perfectly complemented by Coogan.

”True masters of their craft, the stars share a natural chemistry onscreen, and their wry humour leavens the film’s more sombre moments.   While revealing some of the dark deeds of the Catholic Church, the film also reminds us of one of its greatest virtues: forgiveness.”

Philomena will be shown at Landmark Cinemas, 130 Century Crossing in Spruce Grove, at 7 pm.   Liquor on McLeod, which generously sponsors the entire REEL Thursdays series, offers a complimentary wine tasting beginning at 6 pm.
Proceeds from the films support the SGPL and have been used to enhance collections and purchase equipment or furniture.  For further information or to volunteer a few hours of your time in support of REEL Thursdays, contact the Friends of the Spruce Grove Public Library by e-mailing here.
